Photography is a sign.
I practise it, in a prosaic or poetic way, as it's usual with signs.
I don't use photo of mine, taken by myself, but by others, whom I sometimes reach an agreement whit, or by strangers, famous or unknown ones. I use photograph as supporting signs, good conductors of meaning. The style, the tone choice; the brightness or the alteration I sometimes produce in a photo are part of the poetical pratice of expression. Then it's a linguistic sign for me, a natural or cultural one, like an archaeological fragment, or a common expression in the  verbal speech. I use it as a matter, though already elaborated, a form and a quotation, as everything is in the world - be it also artistic. It can be happen to insert an artist's drawing in a collage.
I'm saying that each sign has his peculiar connotations, just like a fishbone or a razor, but not such that they can't be inserted in the context that lines up, modifies or utilizes the original meaning for a further meaning.
Every sign come from other signs, fit to join the organization of further signs, even though it is already (a photograph in this case) a perfect organization of signs. The final result is a different meaning, and a new symbol. Culture consists of this text-context, as is always every  expressive pratice.
